HISTORY

Mi Casita started in the winter of 2010, when Eva Ruiz, the founder, took a leap of faith. Leaving her position as the Director of Community Affairs at the NYC Department of Education, Eva pursued her dream of creating a learning environment, one which she would be proud to have her own daughter attend.

Eva’s dream was to create a home-away-from-home for early learning that reflected the best practices she had seen as a teacher, researcher, policy advisor, and parent. As a bilingual herself, she also envisioned instruction that would nurture her daughter’s sense of bilingual and bicultural identity.

That year, Mi Casita was born. The home-based center valued education as a learning partnership between children, teachers, and families. It emphasized place-based learning by placing value on the many cultures that co-exist in Brooklyn through community engagement and neighborhood exploration. It provided a caring and nurturing environment rich in both Spanish and English language and culture.

In 2019, Mi Casita expanded to become the preschool on Bedford Ave that it is today. Mi Casita still fosters the same intimate feeling that parents and children valued from its start as a local home-based program. Our center still has the same pedagogical philosophy, high quality teaching, and emphasis on community partnerships. Now, with more space and resources, we are able to serve more families, do more creative programming, and are growing into a cultural community space.
